woman with neck pain after an auto accident

Auto accident injuries, often called whiplash or acceleration/deceleration injuries, are usually caused by hyperextension and hyper-flexion of the spine during auto accidents. They can affect the neck, mid back and low back regions. If treated soon enough, inflammation can usually be reduced and scar tissue minimized.

Often the patient is left with a loss of curvature in the cervical spine, inflammation, instability of the spine, spinal misalignment, strained muscles, sprained ligament damage and sometimes bulging or herniated discs. These contributing factors may cause neck and back pain, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, shoulder pain, pain into the arm or hands and reduced ability to turn the head or trunk.

Health Insurance Accepted

We accept all automobile insurance and are in network with all major medical insurance companies: UPMC, Highmark, BCBS, Aetna, United, ASH, Medicare, Medicaid, Gateway, and more.

Auto Injury Treatment Plan

First, our doctors will perform a thorough chiropractic examination and determine if any diagnostic tests are needed. We will determine a diagnosis and create a customized treatment plan for your care. Once the inflammation has resolved and spinal stability has been confirmed treatment can begin and manipulation is introduced for mobilization. Physical therapy is used to reduce muscle spasms and strengthen stabilizers to help restore function.

Phases of Care

Phase 1 is characterized by inflammation as the body attempts to repair itself after injury. If left untreated, inflammation becomes excessive or uncontrolled and can lead to delayed healing, pain and chronic inflammation.

Objective:

  • Reduce discomfort, swelling and muscle spasm
  • Improve range of motion
  • Prevent scar tissue

Treatment:

  • Chiropractic manipulation (light force only)
  • Passive therapeutic modalities
  • Ice
  • ADL (Activities of Daily living)

Phase 2 accelerates after pain and swelling are controlled. During this time, the body continues to regenerate cells and collagen, as well as develop scar tissue.

Objective:

  • Improve range of motion
  • Support joint function
  • Promote healing (specifically soft tissue reconstruction)

Treatment:

  • Chiropractic manipulation
  • Modalities
  • Ice/Heat
  • Nutrition

The purpose of our functional restoration program is to restore joint mobility, muscular strength, endurance and conditioning, as well as cardiovascular fitness leading to restoration of the ability to perform specific functional tasks such as lifting, bending, twisting and tolerance to prolonged static positioning.

  • Strengthen spinal stabilizers
  • Increase balance and coordination
